Ariz. law drafter calls court ruling a 'victory'
PHOENIX (AP) ? Arizona officials claimed a partial victory Monday after the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the "show me your papers" provision of the state's immigration law, while rights groups vowed to prevent it from ever taking effect.
While the court struck down most of the law, it preserved a section that requires police to check the status of people stopped for various reasons and who also might appear to be in the U.S. illegally.
The court, however, prohibited officers from arresting people on immigration charges.
The justices also added that the immigration status check could be subject to additional legal challenges. Critics have argued that it allows police officers to racially profile people.
Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer called the decision a victory for all Americans, saying that the law could now be enforced and that any officer who violates a person's civil rights will be held accountable.
Brewer said she expected lawsuits to challenge the implementation of the law. "It's certainly not the end of our journey," she said.
Immigration rights groups said they were surprised and disappointed by the court's decision, and planned to ask the lower courts to block implementation.
"The opinion invites the challenges that we are bringing. It's going to cause racial profiling. It will cause prolonged detentions," said Linton Joaquin of the National Immigration Law Center, one of the groups pushing a separate challenge to the Arizona law.
Kansas attorney Kris Kobach, who helped draft the Arizona law and has advised officials in other states wanting to crack down on illegal immigration, called the ruling "a big victory for Arizona" while acknowledging that "it's not a complete victory."
The ruling gives states "a green light" to enact "check your papers" laws, as well as other initiatives, such as requiring employers to use the federal e-Verify database to check the status of new workers, said Kobach, a Republican who is the Kansas secretary of state.
Arizona passed the law in 2010, with lawmakers arguing that that federal government wasn't adequately preventing illegal immigration. The Obama administration sued to block it, saying that enforcing immigration laws was a federal responsibility.
Federal courts had refused to let the four key provisions take effect.
Five states ? Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, South Carolina and Utah ? have adopted variations on Arizona's law. Parts of those laws also are on hold pending the outcome of the Supreme Court case.
Kobach said the decision was not a 100 percent victory for Arizona because "some of the less important provisions of the law were struck down." He added: "The reason can be summed up in two words: Justice Kennedy."
Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote the opinion for the court, a unanimous decision on allowing the status check to go forward. The court, however, was divided on striking down the other portions.
They were the sections that required all immigrants to obtain or carry immigration registration papers, made it a state criminal offense for an illegal immigrant to seek work or hold a job and allowed police to arrest suspected illegal immigrants without warrants.
Arizona has spent almost $3 million defending the law for the last two years, the Arizona Republic reported Monday.
In the Phoenix area, some residents were pleased that the court struck down most of the law.
Standing outside of a Home Depot, Carlos Beltran was looking for day labor work. Beltran, who was born in the U.S. but whose parents are illegal immigrants, said he was glad to hear the court struck down most of the law.
"We can still be here today, find a job and go home and tell our wives we have something to eat tonight," he said.
With the ruling, Beltran said, the potential for racial profiling will now become worse. "I don't want to have my dad afraid of looking for a job. He has four kids. They shouldn't be afraid of trying to make a living," he said.
Audrey Pulido, who owns The Garage Bike Shop, said she was pleased that most of the law was struck down but said it's unfair that police still can check a person's immigration status.
"Actually what you're doing is you're stereotyping a person," said Pulido, whose husband was in the U.S. illegally before they were married. "It's like judging a book before you even read it, just by what they are. They are human beings, first of all."
Pulido's shop sits inside a shopping area in the predominantly Hispanic town of Guadalupe in the Phoenix area. She said residents do not talk much about the law but it has instilled fear in them and factors into how they plan out their lives.
Pulido said a waitress in the restaurant next door asked her if she would sign a notarized document to care for her son if the woman got deported. "I would do it in a heartbeat," she said. "I would not hesitate.
"You don't get that all the time," Pulido said. "They have to think that way ? 'What's going to happen to me?'"

Lochte, Phelps advance to final of loaded 400 IM
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) ? Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps will have their first showdown on the opening night of the U.S. Olympic swimming trials.
The world's top swimmers advanced to Monday's final of the 400-meter individual medley, a loaded race that also includes the silver medalist from last year's world championships, Tyler Clary. Only the top two earn a spot on the team for London.
Lochte, the defending world champion, was the top qualifier in morning preliminaries with a time of 4 minutes, 10.66 seconds. Phelps was next fastest, cruising through his preliminary heat in 4:14.72. Clary was fourth-fastest at 4:15.88.
Phelps is the world-record holder and won the 400 IM at the last two Olympics, but he vowed to drop the grueling event after Beijing. He brought it back over the past year and said he's known "for a while" that he would be in the race at Omaha. The only stumble came beforehand, when Phelps realized he had the wrong cap. He found a plain white model that worked just fine.
"It felt fairly relaxed," said Phelps, a 14-time Olympic gold medalist who plans to retire after these games. "I'm happy."
Lochte was pleased with his effort, though he knows he'll need to go even faster to beat Phelps. He expects his rival to put in a much better time in the evening.
"That was the easiest 4:14 he's ever done, that I've seen in the whole entire world," Lochte said. "It looked really, really smooth for him. Tonight's definitely going to be a dogfight. It's not just going to be me and Michael. It's going to be Tyler Clary, too. It's definitely going to be a fight."
Brendan Hansen, who quit the sport after two straight disappointing Olympics but decided to come back for the London Games, advanced in the 100 breaststroke with the second-fastest time.
"Just get that first one under your belt ? that's what I wanted to do," said Hansen, whose time of 1:00.30 was a hundredth of a second behind lead qualifier John Criste. "It was a little rough. But I've been feeling great in the water, and I'm just going to get faster with every swim."
Also advancing to the evening semifinals was Eric Shanteau, who competed in Beijing after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.
Phelps' coach, Bob Bowman, was coy about his plans before the trials but said he's known since a March meet in Indianapolis that Phelps was going to compete in the 400 IM.
"He did one and it's really the best one he's ever done in a season," Bowman said. "He was like, 'Man, it would be a shame not to do this.' We'll know a lot more tonight whether that was a good decision."
Clary expected Phelps to scratch from the event, which would have made it much easier to qualify for a spot on the Olympic team. Now, Clary has to beat either Lochte or Phelps to compete in the 400 IM in London.
"It will definitely be a more interesting race now," Clary said, managing a slight grin. "All I can do is control myself. It doesn't matter to me who's in the heat. I'm going to go out and swim the race that I've got in my mind. I think that'll be good enough."
Lochte is eager to face Phelps as many times as possible in Omaha before they resume their rivalry in London.
"Of course, I want to win," Lochte said. "I hate not winning. I love to win. But if it doesn't happen, it doesn't happen. I'm not going to beat myself up over it."
Dana Vollmer, coming back from the disappointment of missing the Olympics four years ago, was the top qualifier in the 100 butterfly. She posted the fastest time ever in the United States (56.59), breaking a 12-year-old mark, and has her sights on Sarah Sjoestroem's world record (56.06), which was set in 2009 during the era of high-tech, rubberized suits.
"It's always in the back of my mind," said Vollmer, the defending world champion in the 100 fly. "I definitely want to do a 55."
Vollmer, who made the 2004 Olympics as a 16-year-old, battled injuries and medical problems for much of the past decade, but she's healthy now and thriving with a new diet.
"I feel better than I did at worlds," she said. "That race felt good, but I still feel like I didn't put all I have into it knowing it's just the prelims. To be at that time, it's definitely a good sign for my next swims."
Elizabeth Beisel led qualifying in the women's 400 IM at 4:35.72, nearly 4 seconds ahead of Caitlin Leverenz. Connor Jaeger was fastest in preliminaries of the men's 400 freestyle (3:48.06), with two-time Olympian Peter Vanderkaay also claiming a spot in the evening final.

Apple files for security, simulation, display luminance and flash memory patents
Apple has filed for several new patents, covering security, display luminance, flash memory, mobile device simulation and more. However the volume of creative and visionary patents filed by Apple within the past few months is considerably lower than usual.
Patently Apple reports that the new patent filings, published by the US Patent & Trademark Office on Thursday, includes security patents involving cryptographic pass codes, the display of spatio-temporal dithered images with colour shift and luminance, streaming zip filed via flash memory, a way to simulate the performance of a mobile device for improved testing abilities, and the automatic discovery of metadata.
Apple?s patents are all utility-centric, and although these kinds of patents ensure that Apple protects the small details behind its products, it is unusual to see such a lack of more significant patents. Patently Apple describes the patent shortage as ?nothing shy of anaemic?.
?Here?s hoping that Apple is in the process of changing gears and inventing their next-generation of knock-out products for us to enjoy,? says the report.

Football: Centurion Alonso sends Spain into Euro semi-finals
DONETSK, Ukraine: Spain moved a step closer to an unprecedented treble of consecutive major international honours by beating France 2-0 in Donetsk on Saturday to reach the Euro 2012 semi-finals.
Goals in each half from Xabi Alonso, on his 100th international appearance, sent the world and European champions into a semi-final with Iberian rivals Portugal in the same Donbass Arena stadium on Wednesday.
It was Spain's first competitive win in seven attempts against France, who were bidding to become the first team to eliminate Spain from a major tournament since the French side that reached the 2006 World Cup final.
While Spain can now contemplate the prospect of facing the in-form Cristiano Ronaldo, France return home after fulfilling their objective of reaching the last eight, only to fall short against the world's top national side.
"Is a quarter-final the level where France is at the moment? I don't know, what I do know is that the best sides will be in the semi-finals and France won't be," said France coach Laurent Blanc.
In an attempt to nullify Spain's attacking threat, Blanc opted for a conservative 4-5-1 formation, with right-back Mathieu Debuchy lining up in an unfamiliar right-wing role ahead of Anthony Reveillere.
Spain coach Vicente del Bosque, meanwhile, elected to deploy Barcelona midfielder Cesc Fabregas instead of Fernando Torres at the centre of a fluid attacking configuration.
Abandoning their usual possession-focused approach, France retreated and allowed Spain to take the initiative, and Fabregas had an early penalty appeal turned down after his heels were clipped by Gael Clichy.
With two right-backs on the pitch, France's right flank should have been impregnable, but it was from a move down the left that Spain went ahead in the 14th minute.
Andres Iniesta released Jordi Alba and he held off the stumbling Debuchy to cross for the unmarked Alonso, whose downward header gave the number 14 a 14th international goal.
The lead established, Spain slipped into their familiar passing rhythm and France were left to rely on the forward forays of lone striker Karim Benzema.
One such raid drew a free-kick in an advantageous position, and Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas did well to touch Yohan Cabaye's subsequent attempt over the crossbar.
The low number of fans supporting the two teams made for a subdued atmosphere, while the closest Spain came to extending their lead before half-time was a Gerard Pique header that looped well over.
The start of the second half was similarly muted. Debuchy headed over from Franck Ribery's dinked cross, while Hugo Lloris had to race to the edge of his box to claw the ball away from Fabregas at the other end.
Blanc introduced Samir Nasri, Jeremy Menez and Olivier Giroud from the bench, but still the men in the all-white change strip were unable to capitalise on the promising openings they procured.
There were few scares for Spain in the final 10 minutes, and they made sure of victory in injury time when Alonso swept home a penalty after Reveillere had bundled substitute Pedro Rodriguez to the deck.
It will come as scant consolation to France, but they will not have long to wait for revenge.
The sides are due to meet again in a qualifying match for the 2014 World Cup in Spain on October 16.

MANAMA, Bahrain (AP) ? Bahrain's main opposition bloc says riot police firing rubber bullets have injured the head of the Shiite majority's main political bloc while trying to break up protests in the country's capital.
A statement from Al Wefaq says the organization's secretary-general Sheik Ali Salman was shot in the shoulder and back during demonstrations in Manama, which are common following Friday prayers. It did not say how seriously he was injured.
The statement said Hassan al-Marzooq, another opposition leader, was shot and wounded in the chest. It said he was still bleeding.
Bahrain has experienced near daily protests for 16 months caused by an uprising by the kingdom's Shiite majority seeking greater political rights from the Western-backed Sunni monarchy.

Waves of responders deploy omics to track Deepwater Horizon cleanup microbes
ScienceDaily (June 21, 2012) ? In the aftermath of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico two years ago, various strategies were deployed to prevent 4.9 million barrels of light crude oil from fouling the waters and reaching the shores. A team of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) researchers found that nature also played a role in the dispersal process as marine microbial communities responded to the oil plume that made its way from the wellhead at a depth of 5,000 feet to the surface of the water.
"There was oil on the surface and oil below, but no oil in between," said microbial ecologist Terry Hazen, former head of the Ecology Department at Berkeley Lab and now holder of the University of Tennessee-Oak Ridge National Laboratory Governor's Chair. In a report published a few months after the oil spill, Hazen's team reported that the microbes in the water were partly responsible for the oil's disappearance. While several studies have since confirmed that various microbes played a role in the dispersal of the oil in the Gulf, understanding the composition of the microbial community and the roles of its members has not fully achieved until now.
To learn more about the microbial community's response to the oil spill, researchers led by Berkeley Lab senior scientist Janet Jansson availed themselves of the expertise and resources at two of the Lab's national user facilities, the U.S. Department of Energy Joint Genome Institute (DOE JGI) and the Advanced Light Source (ALS). The work done by the Lab's disaster response team demonstrated Ernest Lawrence's pioneering vision of team science. The findings, published in two separate articles, track a series of microbial species dominating the community in the waters at various time points to remove different fractions of the oil.
As reported in an article published online June 21, 2012 in The ISME Journal, the team describes using a combination of genomics techniques to study the way the microbes responded to the influx of oil. They focused on the community's expressed functional information or metatranscriptome. In addition, they isolated single cells to identify the predominant microbial members in the deep ocean oil plume. Using the latter technique, they were able to assemble a draft genome of what they say is the first deep-sea, oil-eating bacterium from a single cell.
Jansson's postdoctoral fellow Olivia Mason collected deep water samples from the oil plume that appeared during the Deepwater Horizon spill 1.5 kilometers and 11 km from the wellhead and the samples were analyzed by a team of scientists back at the Berkeley Lab. Mason extracted DNA and RNA from the samples and at the DOE JGI, researchers led by Microbial Program head Tanja Woyke and Metagenome Program head Susannah Tringe subjected the samples to deep sequencing approaches, generating billions of bases of data for each sample. Mason analyzed the resulting metagenomic (DNA) and metatranscriptomic (RNA) sequences to reveal genes for functions such as hydrocarbon degradation. Data analysis revealed an abundance of genes involved in the degradation of alkanes, as well as genes involved in degradation of aromatic compounds. A separate group under DOE JGI Microbial Program head Tanja Woyke worked to isolate and sequence three cells of Oceanospirillales bacteria, two of which they were able to co-assemble into a draft genome.
Mason then searched against a database of microbial proteins known to be involved in the pathways for breaking down hydrocarbons. The results suggested that the microbes responding to the plume were predominantly Oceanospirillales bacteria, able to break down cyclohexanes.
Jansson said that the results suggest a succession of microbes acted on the oil spill, degrading different fractions. "I think what we're seeing are these waves of community members and this is known to happen in the ocean. We probably have a bloom of alkane degraders that were present when we sampled early in the spill history. In later expeditions they found methane degraders or propane degraders suggesting that there was a succession in the community and their properties," she said.
Adding credence to their hypothesis are the results of a simulation Jansson and her colleagues reported in a separate study published May 23, 2012 in Environmental Microbiology. The researchers modeled the oil plume scenario using uncontaminated water from the Gulf that was supplemented with oil collected during the spill, and dispersants. The team employed DNA sequencing at the DOE JGI to monitor the composition of the microbial community that was responsible for breakdown of the hydrocarbons. The distribution of "flocs," clusters of microorganisms, oil, and oil degradation products were also studied with the help of Berkeley Lab's Advanced Light Source, a DOE Office of Science-supported facility that offers a beamline -- ALS Infrared Beamline 1.4 -- that produces infrared spectra ideal for studying living bacteria individually or in small groups. "The aim was to enrich natural deep sea bacteria from the Gulf of Mexico on oil in the laboratory so that we could study them," she said, "and the results were the same as what was seen in nature." In addition, they successfully cultivated an oil-degrading Colwellia bacterium from the oil enrichments that had sequence similarity to those reported from the oil plume.
However, as the Oceanospirillales microbe that was sequenced using single cell sequencing remained uncultivated, Jansson said that further studies such as those conducted in the second study will have to wait until an isolate can be obtained. In the meantime, one direction the researchers have taken is to conduct a metagenomic analysis of sediment samples collected near the oil rig both during and after the Deepwater Horizon spill and of sediment samples from natural oil seeps.
Jansson said that combining the metagenomic, metatranscriptomic and single-cell sequencing techniques accessed through the collaboration with the DOE JGI provided a uniquely comprehensive perspective on the findings. "When we compared the RNA to the DNA we saw enrichment in the same kinds of genes for certain compounds. For example, the genes for degradation of cyclohexane were very abundant in the plume and they were being expressed. It was essential to have the expression data because without that, the DNA might be there but we'd be at a loss to determine whether there was any relevant functional activity," she said. "This shows what's really going on when and where you take your samples. We found that the genes were there, that specific classes of genes were highly expressed, and then they were also found in the single cell that we sequenced -- all together it made for a really coherent story that can serve as a model for future studies."

Mubarak health crisis report hikes Egypt turmoil
CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's Hosni Mubarak was moved out of prison to a military hospital Tuesday after the 84-year-old ousted leader suffered a stroke and his condition rapidly deteriorated, officials said, adding a new element of uncertainty just as a potentially explosive fight opened over who will succeed him, with both candidates claiming to have won last weekend's presidential election.
The developments add further layers to what is threatening to become a new chapter of unrest and political power struggles in Egypt, 16 months after Mubarak was ousted by a popular uprising demanding democracy.
The campaign of Mubarak's former prime minister, Ahmed Shafiq, said Tuesday he has won Egypt's presidential election, countering the Muslim Brotherhood's claim of victory for its candidate, Mohammed Morsi.
The election commission is to announce the official final results on Thursday and no matter who it names as victor, his rival is likely to reject the result as a fraud. If Shafiq is declared winner in particular, it could spark an explosive backlash from the Brotherhood.
The Brotherhood, Egypt's most powerful political group, is already escalating its challenge against the ruling military over the generals' move this week to give themselves overwhelming authority over the next president. Some 50,000 protesters, mostly Islamists, massed in Cairo's Tahrir Square on Tuesday evening chanting slogans in support of Morsi and denouncing the generals' power grab.
The health crisis of Mubarak, who is serving a life prison sentence, is yet one more thing to stoke the heat. His condition took a sharp turn for the worse Tuesday evening, the state news agency MENA reported, and officials transferred him from Torah Prison to the nearby Maadi military hospital ? the same one where his predecessor Anwar Sadat was declared dead more than 30 years ago after being gunned down by Islamic militants.
Mubarak suffered a stroke and is suffering a "fast deterioration of his health," MENA said. Earlier, it said, his heart stopped and doctors had to use a defibrillator, and prison officials said he lost consciousness. TV images showed a convoy of ambulances and military vehicles transferring Mubarak from Torah Prison to nearby Maadi Hospital in a suburb south of Cairo.
Moving Mubarak out of prison is likely to further infuriate many in the public, where there is a widespread suspicion that security and military officials sympathetic to their old boss are giving him preferential treatment ? so much so that some Egyptians dismiss repeated reports of his faltering health as a pretext for taking him out of prison.
Since June 2, Mubarak has been serving a life sentence at Cairo's Torah Prison for failing to stop the killing of protesters during the 18-day uprising against his rule last year. The verdict against him has already been a spark for protests ? thousands massed in Tahrir when the court acquitted him and his sons on separate corruption charges and cleared several top security chiefs on the protester killings.
The multiple disputes have turned a moment that was once anticipated by some as a landmark in Egypt's post-Mubarak transition ? the election of the first civilian president in 60 years ? into a potentially destabilizing snarl.
Shafiq's campaign spokesman, Ahmed Sarhan, told a televised news conference that Shafiq won 51.5 percent of the vote and that the claim of victory by Morsi was "false."
"Gen. Ahmed Shafiq is the next president of Egypt," said Sarhan. He said Shafiq won some 500,000 votes more than Morsi, of the fundamentalist Brotherhood.
The Shafiq campaign's claim came just hours after Morsi's campaign repeated their claims of victory, saying Morsi had won 52 percent of the vote compared to Shafiq's 48.
The Brotherhood first announced Morsi's victory early Monday, around six hours after polls closed. It said its claim was based on returns announced by election officials from each counting center around the country. Each campaign has representatives at every center, who compile the individual returns. The Brotherhood's compilation during the first round of voting last month proved generally accurate and, when it announced its victory early on in that race, it raised no objections.
But this time, Shafiq's campaign countered quickly, saying early Monday that its ongoing count showed their man ahead. Tuesday's announcement was its first claim that it had won.
Shafiq, a former air force commander who was named prime minister during Mubarak's last days, is seen by his opponents as likely to preserve the military-backed police state that his former boss headed for three decades. He, in turn, has presented himself as a strongman able to keep Egypt stable and out of the hands of the Brotherhood, playing on fears the group will turn the country into an Islamic state.
Just as polls closed on Sunday night, the military ? which has ruled since Mubarak fell on Feb. 11, 2011 ? issued a constitutional declaration that gave themselves power that all but subordinates the new president, a move critics called a "coup" intended to maintain their control over the state even after they nominally transfer authorities to the president by July 1.
The declaration gave the generals legislative powers and control over the process of drafting a new constitution and the national budget. It also shields the military against any kind of civilian oversight and allows the generals to run their own affairs without interference from civilian authorities.
A court ruling also dissolved the Islamist-dominated parliament last week, a verdict that has been endorsed by a decree issued by military ruler Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi. The Brotherhood and its Islamist allies dismissed the decree, arguing that Tantawi had no right to issue it with less than two weeks before the scheduled transfer of power to civilians. Also last week, the military-backed government granted military police and intelligence agents the right to arrest civilians for a host of suspected crimes, a move that many viewed as tantamount to a declaration of martial law.
Thousands were demonstrating in Cairo and the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria Tuesday evening to denounce the constitutional declaration, which also strips the next president of significant powers and the court ruling.
The estimated 50,000 protesters in Cairo's Tahrir Square, birthplace of last year's anti-Mubarak uprising, were mostly Brotherhood supporters and other Islamists joined by a small group of leftist and liberal activists.
"It is not possible to have a revolution and then have military rule and a president with no authority," said protester Mohammed Abdel-Hameed, a 48-year-old schoolmaster who said he came with his son and others to Tahrir from Fayyoum, an oasis province 60 miles (100 kilometers) southwest of Cairo.
"How can they dissolve parliament and spend all that money again on another election? This is a waste of public funds," he said. "If they want blood we are ready to offer blood. I am. So that my son can live free," warned Abdel-Hameed, who wore traditional galabeya robes.
Some protesters gathered outside parliament earlier Tuesday, and a number of lawmakers tried to enter the building but were turned away by security forces. Hundreds of black-clad policemen armed with clubs and shields ringed the building, standing behind metal barricades.
"Wake up Field marshal. We defended our revolution through the ballot boxes," protesters chanted, referring to Tantawi, Mubarak's defense minister for 20 years. "You coward Field Marshal, free parliament," they screamed.
"No revolution that is protected by God will fail," said Saber Ibrahim, a 36-year-old school teacher who came from his native Beni Suef south of Cairo to participate in the rally. "We, the people, gave them (the military) legitimacy and we now are taking back."
On Tuesday former U.S. President Jimmy Carter expressed his concerns. His Carter Center monitored the weekend runoff as it has every nationwide vote in Egypt since Mubarak's ouster in a popular uprising engineered by pro-democracy youth groups.
"I am deeply troubled by the undemocratic turn that Egypt's transition has taken," Carter said in a statement Tuesday. "The dissolution of the democratically-elected parliament and the return of elements of martial law generated uncertainty about the constitutional process before the election," he said, adding that the constitutional declaration violated the military's commitment to make a full transfer of power to an elected civilian government.
"An unelected military body should not interfere in the constitution drafting process," said Carter, alluding to the military's control over the writing of the charter. Carter is a regular visitor of Egypt, where he often meets with the ruling generals and government leaders.
Amnesty International said the powers acquired by the military could lead to further human rights violations and, unless modified, they would allow the generals "to continue to trample on human rights with impunity."
It said the control of the military over the panel tasked with drafting the constitution allows it to reject any attempt to restrain the military, put it under civilian oversight or hold it accountable for human rights abuses.
"It is deeply worrying that the army has paved the way for it to continue to arrest and detain civilians, as well as to use force against protesters, with no effective oversight of their actions," an Amnesty statement quoted Philip Luther, the group's director for the Middle East and North Africa, as saying.
Hoda Mahmoud, a 32-year old human resources manager, was out protesting at Tahrir Square on Tuesday. A member of a youth group known as the Revolutionary Socialists, she said her real fight is with the military and predicted that the Brotherhood may eventually back down.
"The fight is in the street, not one about political settlements," she said, alluding to the Brotherhood's reputation for political opportunism and appetite for back-room deals.
The official result of the weekend presidential vote will be announced on Thursday. With each side now insisting it won, an announcement either way by the election commission could now raise protests from the losing side.

Top 3 online gaming portals right now | PRES TECH
Online gaming is a huge business right now, with console sales suffering due to the convenience and ability to play games any time anywhere thanks to smartphones. When it comes to selecting the top portals the choice is vast and varied, and the only way to really determine which ones lead the way is to go by the number of users that log in on a daily basis to get a fix of their favourite games. Whilst many games are free, certain ones are paid or contain bonus features whereby a credit card or game card from ukash can be used to expand the gaming experience.
Although not a portal in the truest sense of the word, nothing written about online gaming would be complete without the inclusion of the gaming phenomenon that is Angry Birds. This strategy/puzzle game was created by the Finnish game developers Rovio Mobile and has taken the gaming world by storm. Initially released on the Apple iOS in 2009, its success has led to it being made available online on all smartphones and computers.
The premise of the game is simple, by way of a slingshot the player launches birds at the pigs that are scattered in and around the various structures that make up the playing area. The intent is to destroy all the pigs, and that?s it really, and it says something that in today?s world of ever improving technology that such a simple game can capture the imagination of the world.
As far as portals go, it?s hard to find one with more regular users than the social media giant Facebook. With over 900m users who log in for an average of 12 hours a week, that?s an awful lot of potential gamers, and the number of games available to play through Facebook is increasing all the time. Along with the old favourites Cityville and Bejeweled Blitz there are hundreds of games apps now available, with more being developed all the time.
Another leading type of games portal in terms of users are those which offer casino games, and the most popular of these is 888.com. These games differ from the Facebook equivalents as you are depositing cash and playing for real money, but it is gaming nevertheless. This portal has built up an enviable reputation in the world of casino gaming, and the many offers and promotions make it the leading portal of its kind.

Toxicology tests ordered in Rodney King's death
In an interview with KNBC from April 27, 2012, Rodney King recalls putting on a reggae hat with dreadlocks to witness firsthand the riots triggered by the not guilty verdicts delivered to the police officers who were caught beating him on video.

Authorities have ordered toxicology tests in the death of Rodney King, but the results won?t be known for several weeks, a sheriff?s spokeswoman told msnbc.com on Monday.
King, the black motorist whose videotaped beating by Los Angeles police officers in 1991 sparked some of the deadliest race riots in U.S. history, was found dead on Sunday. He was 47.
Police in Rialto, Calif., found King's body?in a swimming pool after?his fiancee called 911,?Rialto Police Capt. Randy DeAnda told?NBC News.?He was transported to Arrowhead Hospital in Colton, where he was pronounced dead at 6:11 a.m. PDT, DeAnda said.
An autopsy was scheduled for Monday, but results won?t be released today, San Bernardino County Sheriff's spokeswoman Jodi Miller said. Authorities said there were no signs of foul play.
Rodney King: 20 years after L.A. riots, 'Can we all get along?'
King was beaten by Los Angeles Police Department officers?on a dark street on March 3, 1991, after he was stopped for speeding. Four officers hit him more than 50 times, kicked him and shot him with stun guns. A bystander videotaped much of the incident from a distance.
A year later, a California jury acquitted three of the four officers. The jury deadlocked on one of the charges for the fourth officer, Laurence Powell. Three of the officers were white and one Hispanic.
The riots that?erupted on?April 29, 1992, were among the most lethal in U.S. history. By the time order was restored, more than 50 people had died, nearly 3,000 were injured and thousands of businesses were damaged or destroyed.
20 years later: Have race relations improved?
In the two decades after he became the central figure in the riots, King was arrested several times, mostly for alcohol-related crimes. He later became a record company executive and a reality TV star, appearing on shows such as "Celebrity Rehab."
Looking back on that time, King told NBCLosAngeles.com in April, ?Some of me wanted to get out there and riot and loot and tear up stuff too, but it just wasn?t the way I was raised.?
When he ventured into the streets during the riots, he wore a reggae hat with dreadlocks so people wouldn?t recognize him.
?It just looked a little bit like the war zone to me, smoke everywhere,? he told the station. ?It broke my heart to look at that and to know this is, it?s really all about racial tension, and it?s a man-made problem.?
When King sat down with NBCLosAngeles.com, he?was promoting his just-published memoir, "The Riot Within: My Journey From Rebellion to Redemption," which came out around the 20th anniversary of the L.A. riots. According to the biography that accompanied his book, King?had three children and was engaged to marry Cynthia Kelley, a juror in the civil suit he brought against the city of Los Angeles.
Nearly a year after the riots, a federal jury convicted two of the police officers of a federal charge of violating King?s civil rights and sentenced them to 30 months in prison. Two other officers were acquitted. King eventually received a $3.8 million settlement from the city, and the case led to sweeping changes in LAPD.
King said he was no longer bitter about what had happened.
?I like to be able to wake up and be able to pray for myself and pray for the world, that?s the most important thing,? he told NBCLosAngeles.com.
