Lufthansa Q2 profit falls on fuel costs, taxes

BERLIN (AP) ? Airline Lufthansa blamed high fuel costs and new taxes on air travel in its German and Austrian home markets for a 24 percent decline in second quarter earnings.

Deutsche Lufthansa AG said Thursday that net earnings fell to ?229 million ($270 million) from ?301 million a year earlier. Revenue grew by 6 percent to ?7.9 billion and the number of passengers between April and June rose slightly to 27.5 million.

The Lufthansa group includes Austrian Airlines and Swiss. The Cologne-based company also holds stakes in Brussels Airlines and JetBlue of the United States.

The earnings were bolstered by progress in restructuring ailing Austrian Airlines, which churned out an operating profit of ?26 million in the first half of the year. That compared with a loss of ?64 million a year earlier. Lufthansa did not disclose quarterly figures for the unit.

The company's shares rose by some 3 percent in early Frankfurt trading to ?10.61.

However, Lufthansa reaffirmed its cautious 2012 outlook, saying the group "expects a revenue increase and an operating profit in the mid three-digit million area."

Lufthansa's second-quarter performance followed a net loss of ?397 million in the first three months of the year, also blamed on high fuel prices.

Lufthansa announced in May that it will shed 3,500 office jobs over the coming years to cut costs and boost lagging profits.

The cuts are part of a cost-reduction program that started at the beginning of the year and aims to improve the company's operating profit by ?1.5 billion compared to 2011 by the end of 2014.

Pantech Renue (AT&T)

Green Tech Green Technology Approved by PCMag.com AT&T's latest messaging phone, the squat $69.99 Pantech Renue, may not look like much, but it's one of the better messaging phones the carrier is offering right now. It has a rugged, eco-conscious build, responsive touch screen, roomy slide-out keyboard, and a user-friendly interface. On the other hand, it has a weak camera, lacks voice dialing, and isn't a great video player. Still, it should make you happy if your main interest is messaging.

Design and Call Quality
The Renue measures a squarish 3.9 by 2.5 by 0.5 inches (HWD) and weighs a reasonable 4.5 ounces. The slide-off back panel is made from a textured, slightly rubberized black plastic, while the rest of the phone is covered in a mixture of shiny and matte black plastics. The front of the phone is mostly dedicated to the 3.2-inch, 320-by-240-pixel display. Though it looks bright enough, that resolution is pretty low for a display this size, so text and images look jagged.

When closed, there are three touch-based function keys beneath the display. The screen slides open to reveal the Renue's spacious, four-row QWERTY keyboard. The keys are well-sized, and made of shiny black plastic with white and blue lettering. They're a little flat, but otherwise easy to press. Text messages are threaded, so they read like a conversation. That, combined with an attractive interface and the solid keyboard, makes the Renue a great phone if you like to text a lot.

The Renue is made from 67% recyclable and hazard-free materials with packaging made from post-consumer recycled paper and soluble ink. The phone is AT&T eco-rated, UL Environment certified, RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) compliant, and comes with an Energy Star 2.0 charger and power saving app, along with eco-themed calendar reminders and alarms. All of those features add up to earn the Renue our GreenTech award. And even with its eco-focus, the phone is built well enough to withstand extreme temperatures, humidity, and solar radiation, so it's a bit more rugged than your average device.

The Pantech Renue is a quad-band EDGE (850/900/1800/1900 MHz) and dual-band HSPA 3.6 (850/1900 MHz) device with no Wi-Fi. Voice quality is average. Voices sound fine in the phone's earpiece, but maximum volume is just a little bit low. Calls made with the phone have poor noise cancellation but sound decent otherwise. And calls sounded okay through a Jawbone Era?Bluetooth headset , but there is no voice dialing, Bluetooth or otherwise. The speakerphone sounds fine but is not nearly loud enough to use outside. Battery life was average at 6 hours and 27 minutes of talk time.

User Interface and Apps
The Renue has a sharp, simple, touch-based user interface. There are five customizable home screens you can swipe between, to which it's easy to add apps or shortcuts. Icons at the bottom of the screen give you quick access to the phone dialer, contacts, messages, and applications. The app menu features three pages of large, colorfully animated app icons. And while it's certainly no speed demon, the Renue's Qualcomm QSC6270T processor is able to move things along at a decent clip.

The Renue has an email app with access to AIM, AOL, AT&T, Gmail, Hotmail, and Yahoo accounts. The Opera Mini 5.1 browser works well to deliver WAP and HTML pages. AT&T Navigator is preinstalled for voice-enabled GPS directions, but that costs $9.99 per month. If you want to use the Web browser, a data plan costs $15 per month (or $10 per month when you also have unlimited messaging). For those prices, you're better off with even a low-end smartphone, so I'd only consider the Renue (or another feature phone on AT&T in general) if you're looking strictly to talk and text.

Multimedia, Camera, and Conclusions
For multimedia files, there's 190MB of free internal memory, along with an empty microSD card slot underneath the phone's battery. My 32 and 64GB SanDisk cards worked fine. The phone is able to play AAC, MP3, and WMA music files. Sound quality was good through both wired earbuds and Altec Lansing BackBeat?Bluetooth headphones . The music player is attractive, and displays album art spinning around like a record when it's available. Video support, on the other hand, isn't as strong. The Renue is only able to play H.264 and MPEG4 videos at resolutions up to 320-by-240.

The Renue's 3-megapixel camera lacks an LED flash and auto-focus. Shutter speeds are good at 0.5 second, though it takes another second to save the photo. Pictures taken look average for a 3MP sensor, though they come out fairly dark, even outdoors. And the video camera is pretty much unusable. It records 320-by-240-pixel videos at a choppy eight frames per second indoors, and 11 frames per second outside.

So the Renue isn't a multimedia powerhouse, but then again, no feature phone is. If you're most interested in talking and texting, however, it's a very good choice. The Samsung Evergreen has comparable features to the Renue and is also worth a look if you're interested in a phone purely for messaging. The Pantech Swift? is also similar, but at $119.99 it's more expensive, and it isn't as fast as the Renue. If you want more, there are some excellent smartphones available like the $49.99?HTC Vivid? and the $99.99?HTC One X , though you'll have to pay for a monthly data fee.

American flags on the moon are still standing, but they?re now blank

Apollo mission remnants can be seen by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter

When astronauts first touched down on the moon in 1969 as part of NASA's Apollo 11 mission ? and for every Apollo mission that followed ? they left behind evidence that they'd been there, some intentional and some necessary. The most iconic of these were six American flags, all of which were thought to have been destroyed by the harsh conditions on the lunar service or at least knocked over my now. As it turns out, all but one are still standing.

Photographs taken by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) satellite show that five of the flags are right where we left them. The first one, by Apollo 11's Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, was blown down by the lift-off thrust from their lunar lander as it left the moon's surface to reunite with the orbiting command module. The LRO images also show objects such as the lunar rovers used by some Apollo missions, and even the tire tracks they left behind.

One of the most intriguing aspects of these photos is the fact that the remaining U.S. flags have all turned white. This happened due to bleaching by sunlight, which hits the flags for as long as 14 days at a time without any sort of atmosphere to filter its rays. Manufactured from nylon without any thought as to retaining their looks over the decades of lunar exposure ? they weren't even expected to be standing for long ? the flags cost only $5.50 in the 1960s. We're guessing that the flags eventually carried to Mars by Earth's astronauts will probably be made to last longer ? and cost a pretty penny more.

This is simply amazing. I can see you put a lot of effort in this, and I'm glad to say it was worth it. The world you guys created is rich, full of possibilities and potential, and everyone likes a post-apocalyptic world. I can't wait to join it, so make that reservation for me. I have one question though: How active would you have me be? I can deal with something like one post every couple of days. More than that would be tricky, but not impossible. Hell, this roleplay is so awesome I would like to join it even if you require a post every fifteen minutes, but I need to know nonetheless. Ooh, this has grabbed my attention more than anything I've seen in a while.

I would absolutely love to reserve a slot.

I do have one question though, just a quick one. How dramatic might be? I ask because as I was reading I got an old character of mine in mind, a mutant, though the character is fairly dramatic, having a large, sharp-toothed overbite and generally misaligned jaw, and sometimes a prehensile tail, though the agility this affords them would count as their ability. If that sounds a little too dramatic I could go with another character, but I thought I'd ask before I ploughed on ahead with an application.

EDIT: Okay, two questions. Connected to that, would you accept illustrated character pictures if the character is odd looking? I'm aware you didn't want anime pictures, but I wasn't sure if you just want to avoid anime-type characters, or are going for a consistent style in character pictures.

Again if it's too complicated I'll probably just default to an easier character, but I thought I'd check.

@ Varyar, thank you so much, it means a lot to me :D I am really self-conscious about my work, so this was a big leap for me. Like in any roleplay, the first few days of posting are usually fast-paced and exciting, and then it drops down a bit. I have no set requirement for posting, obviously haha or else you wouldn't be asking, but at least one post every other day or something. I'm sure we can fit around your schedule, such as if you post lots the rest of the chracters will want to be involved with yours, but if you hit a dry spell we may just brush them in the corner for a bit so we may continue on, patiently waiting of course. If you are fine with that, then I am fine with a few days of nothing.

@ VitaminHeart, I'm unsure how dramatic it is, but if that is the character you'd like, then by all means go ahead. It would hinder your character in that they would be like a flashing Neon sigh that really draws attention, and might make it hard for them to be stealthy.

'India out to destroy Pakistan's agriculture' | Pakistan Today | Latest ...

LAHORE?-?Jamaat ud Daawa (JuD) Chief Hafiz Saeed has cautioned against an alleged plan by India to make Pakistan barren by impeding the flow of water in the rivers feeding Pakistan and urged the government to hold immediate dialogues with India. Saeed made this statement while addressing a meeting of party workers in Sialkot and Sahiwal on Monday during Iftar, he said that the government should hold serious dialogues with India, over this crucial issue which would be devastating for the agro-based economy of Pakistan.

He was of the view that friendship with India would never be successful. The distribution and flow of water from India to Pakistan is governed under the Indus water treaty, however, India has sought to build dams on the rivers on its side of the border, raising concerns for Pakistan, which had previously taken its neighbour to the international court of arbitration. The JuD Chief said that the international community could never ignore sacrifices rendered by the people of Indian administered Jammu and Kashmir for their freedom from India. He said that the sun of Kashmiri freedom will soon rise and the sacrifices of thousands of Kashmiris would bear fruit.

He expressed complete solidarity with the oppressed people of Indian administered Jammu and Kashmir. He also expressed grave concern over the rising human rights violations, custodial killings and genocide of innocent Kashmiris by the Indian Army. He was of the view that these atrocities were enough to spur the international community into action. He also urged the world community to use its influence to globally pressurise India to halt inhuman practices against residents of Kashmir. He spoke about DPC?s stance to agitate against the recently restored NATO supply line through Pakistan. Criticising the Pakistan People?s Party-led government for reopening the NATO supply routes to Afghanistan, Saeed said that the DPC would continue its protests against the decision.
