Gonzalez lifts Dodgers over D-backs in 9th

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A day after Josh Beckett won his first game with the Dodgers, the team's blockbuster trade paid off again with Adrian Gonzalez's game-winning double in the bottom of the ninth inning.

His hit scored the tying and winning runs in the Dodgers' 5-4 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday to salvage a split of the series in which all four games were decided by two runs or fewer. Los Angeles remained 4 1/2 games behind NL West-leading San Francisco and a half-game behind St. Louis for the second NL wild card.

Gonzalez had struggled since the Aug. 25 deal that brought him, Beckett, Carl Crawford, Nick Punto to Los Angeles from Boston. He was 6 for 33 in eight games with his new team, then struck out twice and grounded out in his first three at-bats Sunday.

With the Dodgers down to their final two outs, Gonzalez lined an 0-2 pitch into the right field corner off J.J. Putz (1-5).

"I got ahead of Adrian right there and tried to elevate to get him to chase it, but I just didn't get it up enough," said Putz, who gave up a single to Mark Ellis with one out and a walk to Shane Victorino. "The walk is the one that hurts. I was rushing to the plate, trying to be quick and try to keep Ellis from trying to swipe the bag."

Facing a 3-1 count, Victorino was ready to pounce and his aggression carried over to the basepaths.

"I was going to go until Tim (Wallach) told me to stop," said Victorino, who came tearing around from first base to score. "He waved me and I said, `Here we go."'

Matt Kemp celebrated the Dodgers' ninth walk-off win of the season by running up to Gonzalez and soaking him with a container of water during a postgame interview.

"These are fun moments," Gonzalez said. "They don't come too often so you got to enjoy them."

Ronald Belisario (4-1) pitched a scoreless ninth and struck out three while allowing a double to Chris Johnson.

"We haven't played too well at home and it's something we need to do a better job of," Ellis said, noting a walk-off win could be a catalyst. "Sometimes that can get a team rolling. To build off it, you just got to have good at-bats."

Despite blowing an early one-run lead, the Dodgers recovered after winning 2-1 behind Beckett on Saturday night.

"It's a matter of time before this offense gets clicking on all cylinders. We're capable of scoring 10, 15 runs," said Victorino, who joined the Dodgers from Philadelphia a month ago. "Sometimes it takes a certain time to get people going in the same direction."

John McDonald and Miguel Montero each scored a run and drove in two others for the Diamondbacks.

Kemp hit his 18th homer leading off the second to put the Dodgers up 1-0.

Montero's two-run homer with two outs in the fourth inning gave Arizona a 3-1 lead after McDonald's homer leading off the third had tied the score 1-1.

The Dodgers pulled to 3-2 in the sixth on Andre Ethier's RBI groundout to second base that scored Kemp, who walked and advanced to third on a double by Hanley Ramirez.

Arizona extended its lead to 4-2 in the seventh when McDonald reached on an infield single to pitcher Shawn Tolleson, scoring Paul Goldschmidt, who singled, took second on Montero's single, and was sacrificed to third.

The Dodgers made it 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh on Victorino's two-out RBI single that dropped in right field between Chris Young and Justin Upton.

Dodgers starter Chris Capuano gave up three runs and four hits in five innings, struck out four and walked none. He made 78 pitches, his second-fewest of the season.

Arizona rookie starter Wade Miley allowed three runs and nine hits in 6 2-3 innings, struck out three and walked two.

NOTES: Miley hasn't allowed more than two walks in 24 consecutive starts, extending the longest active streak in the majors this season. ... RHP Chad Billingsley is considering having another platelet-rich plasma injection in his injured right elbow. Manager Don Mattingly said Billingsley, who had the first one on Friday, is feeling "a little bit optimistic," but Mattingly said the club won't allow him to start throwing until he's pain-free. ... The Dodgers selected the contract of OF Bobby Abreu from Triple-A Albuquerque and recalled RHP Chris Withrow from Double-A Chattanooga before placing him on the 60-day DL. Abreu returned after hitting .353 in five games with the Isotopes since being designated for assignment on Aug. 1. He struck out as a pinch-hitter in the ninth.

Australia says Karzai 'wrong' on Afghan operation

Australia Monday flatly rejected comments from Afghan President Hamid Karzai that a recent night-time raid which left two men dead was carried out without the approval of local authorities.

Kabul had slammed Australia over the mission, carried out in the wake of last week's killing of three Australian troops by a rogue Afghan soldier, describing it as a "unilateral military operation".

"The president condemns the operation as a breach of the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Afghanistan and NATO on the special military operations," Karzai's office said in a statement.

But Defence Minister Stephen Smith said the operation in restive Uruzgan province had full authorisation, was conducted jointly with 60 Australians and 80 Afghan troops, and had followed the established rules of engagement.

"The statement that has been issued by President Karzai's palace over the weekend in Kabul that this operation was not authorised is wrong," Smith said.

"That is not factually correct, and this point has been made strongly by Australia's ambassador to Afghanistan to palace and presidential officials."

Smith said Australia was "disappointed" by Karzai's comments, describing the situation as a "misunderstanding".

The operation, which was authorised by the governor and police chief of Uruzgan where some 1,500 Australian troops are based, was aimed at capturing the Afghan accused of killing the three Australian soldiers, he said.

He said two insurgents had been killed and a third detained during the raid.

The man in custody was suspected of having helped or sought to help the Afghan soldier, Hekmatullah, flee after he allegedly gunned down three Australian troops last week.

"The outcome of the operation has been the detention of an individual who is regarded not just as a leader of the insurgency in Uruzgan province but a person who has also sought to or actually assisted Hekmatullah in his escape," Smith told reporters.

The insider attack -- of which there have been more than 30 against foreign troops this year -- prompted US special forces in Afghanistan to suspend training for about 1,000 Afghan police recruits to vet existing members.

Smith said Australian and international forces were still "in pursuit" of Hekmatullah and they had come to no conclusion about his motive.

"It's either a personal dispute, a cultural difference or a genuine insider effected by the Taliban," Smith said of previous cases.

"The Taliban claim all of them as you would expect; there is evidence of a small number of incidents where infiltration has occurred."

What is the best size crock pot for a family of 4?

I am in the market for a slow cooker/crock pot, but I want to make sure I buy one that will be good for making standard recipes. If the pot is not 1/2 full of food, will it burn out or dry up?

I have a 6 quart and I have a family of three. The thing is if you want to cook a roast or chicken etc...you want a bigger one. I also have a smaller 4 quart but I only use that one occasionally and I use my 6 quart often.

Your food will burn or dry up if cooked too long...just follow the recipes.

Astronauts, family remember Neil Armstrong

Hundreds of people attended a closed service for Armstrong Friday at a private club in suburban Cincinnati. A national memorial service has been scheduled for Sept. 12 in Washington, although no other details have been released on the service or burial plans for Armstrong. He died Saturday at age 82.

Among some 10 former astronauts attending Friday were John Glenn and Armstrong's crew for the 1969 moon landing, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins.

"You'll never get a hero, in my view, like Neil?Armstrong," said Apollo 8 astronaut Bill Anders, who praised Armstrong after the service for his wisdom and humility in the way he handled becoming a global icon. "It's going to be hard to top."

"America has truly lost a legend," said Eugene Cernan, an Apollo astronaut who is the last man to have walked on the moon.

Sen. Rob Portman, an Ohio Republican, eulogized Armstrong "as a reluctant hero" and said afterward the service was a mix of emotion and humor, with Armstrong's two sons talking about him as a father and grandfather.

"He touched the lives of so many," Portman said.

"He was the embodiment of everything this nation is all about," said NASA Administrator Charles Bolden. Armstrong, he said, had a courageous drive for exploration while being an "incredibly humble" man who probably wouldn't have wanted all the attention of Friday's service.

It included a Navy ceremonial guard, a bagpiper corps and songs including "When the Saints Go Marching In." Four Navy fighter planes flew over at the end of the service, one flying upward in tribute to Armstrong, a former Navy pilot who flew combat missions in Korea.

Raised in Wapakoneta, Ohio, Armstrong developed an early love for aviation.

He commanded the Gemini 8 mission in 1966 and Apollo 11's historic moon landing on July 20, 1969. As a worldwide audience watched on TV, Armstrong took the step on the lunar surface he called "one giant leap for mankind."

Juri Taalman, 78, said he made a special trip from Hartford, Conn., just to stand across the road from the club where the service was held, in tribute to Armstrong.
