8 Reasons To Use Direct Mail instead of Social Media - Social ...

It?s 2012, and the media landscape is more fractured than ever. More than 900 million people are using Facebook, including your grandmother. It?s also an age of Twitter and LinkedIn, texting and mobile apps. Even personal computers suddenly have become yesterday?s news. Now, lives revolve around smartphones and tablets. Yet, as crowded as the media space has become, direct mail still manages to not only fit, but remain a focal point for smart CMOs everywhere. Through it all, the staying power of direct mail remains undiminished.

A recent study by ExactTarget, an international company that specializes in interactive marketing, helps illustrate direct mail?s continued relevance. The survey asked consumers to indicate how they would like to receive 11 different types of messages. A headline in ExactTarget?s 2012 Channel Preference Survey screams the results: ?DIRECT MAIL LIVES!?

Survey Echoes Recent Research

The ExactTarget study gathered detailed input from 1,481 consumers of all ages on how they prefer to receive various types of information. The choices:

? E-mail ? Direct mail ? Telephone ? Text messaging ? Mobile app ? Social media

Out of 11 different categories of marketing messages, direct mail was chosen as the most acceptable means of communication in four categories, tied with e-mail as most acceptable in two others, and came in a close second behind e-mail in another four categories.

According to the survey, 65 percent of consumers have made a purchase as a result of a direct mail piece. The survey report provided the following analysis: ?In the face of always-on channels like e-mail, SMS and social networks, consumers appreciate direct mail?s tangibility, flexibility and once-a-day pace. It also remains the only channel where unsolicited messages are acceptable to a majority of consumers.?

Other recent surveys on consumer preference provided similar results:

? In 2011, Epsilon, a multichannel marketing service, surveyed nearly 5,000 consumers, including more than 2,200 in the United States. More than one-third expressed a preference for direct mail over the multitude of other channels. Of those surveyed, 60 percent said going to the mailbox and receiving a piece of mail provided an emotional boost. Consumers said they found mail to be more trustworthy than other forms of communication. The study found that the preference for mail extended to the 18- to 34-year-old demographic as well.

? In 2010, a Durham+Company survey found direct mail to be twice as effective as e-mail for soliciting donations online. Further underlining the importance of direct mail to motivate online giving, 37 percent who give online say that when they receive a direct mail appeal from a charity, they use the charity?s website to give the donation.

So what is the reason for direct mail?s staying power? We sought the views of seven experts, including the author of the ExactTarget study: Jeffrey Rohrs, vice president, Marketing Research and Education of the Indianapolis-based company. Here?s what they told us ?

Denver-based Heinrich Marketing likes to think of itself as the CSI of the marketing world, asking the tough questions before getting the creative department involved. Heinrich managing director Laura Sonderup says the research has shown that mail continues to be one of the most cost-effective methods for targeting that any marketer can deploy: ?In many instances, mail allows us to localize lead generation far more efficiently than other marketing channels ? down to the census tract and neighborhood level when necessary. Our largest clients insist that direct mail be included in their marketing plans as a means of maximizing budgets and increasing return on investment.?

1. Mail Is Tangible

Direct mail, says Jeffrey Rohrs of ExactTarget, ?provides a tangible experience that digital media does not replicate. And in a world of hyper-fragmentation of communication channels, where you can get a phone call, text, e-mail, post on Facebook, message on Twitter, message on apps, there?s something about mail and how it cuts through the digital clutter that remains attractive to consumers.?

Jamie Matusek, marketing director of Austin, Texas?based QuantumDigital, echoes that view: ?From a consumer perspective, yes, the majority of us have mobile device in hand 24/7 ? but there is something to be said about a targeted mail piece and offer from a company I do business with. It?s a great way to help in making bigger decisions like home improvement projects, or even just getting an invitation to try a new restaurant in my local neighborhood. Mail tends to break through the digital noise for a bit and offers a moment for a targeted message to resonate. Plus, it offers a great way for businesses to focus on local neighborhood marketing, hitting potential customers who are close to home.?

2. Mail Integrates Well

Says Jeffrey Rohrs of ExactTarget: ?As I look at our 2012 survey compared to our 2008 survey, the real story is that we have multichannel consumers due to the explosion of devices, so you?d better have cross-channel communication strategies. You need to be integrating your channels so that you can influence your consumers in different ways. This is where direct mail can work hand-in-glove with e-mail and social media. There will always be a place for channels that break the mold and pleasantly surprise consumers.?

3. People Like Opening Mail

Part of the power of mail, adds ExactTarget?s Jeffrey Rohrs, lies in the mundane consumer ceremony of padding to the mailbox each day: ?There?s a moment every day where folks go to the mailbox, and they take that brief respite and they look at what they?ve received. It is a ritual. It goes beyond habit. It is part of what people do. And those marketers who can get there cost-effectively and creatively will continue to have an opportunity to differentiate themselves and their brand in interesting ways that will produce a return on investment.?

4. There?s Less Competition in Direct Mail

Jon Yokogawa, vice president of consumer engagement for interTrend, a full-service communications agency in Long Beach, Calif., contends that the technology age has actually boosted the impact of direct mail. ?Your e-mail inbox is the new mailbox, filled with bills, letters from friends, family and work,? he says. ?So the amount of paper in your mailbox is less. Therefore, you would be more inclined to look more carefully at any type of mail that you do receive from the Postal Service.??

Content marketing expert Joe Pulizzi, the founder of the Content Marketing Institute, Cleveland, and the largest content marketing event, Content Marketing World, warns marketers against becoming too ?infatuated? with other channels, as mail continues to get the job done. ?For certain goals like getting immediate attention, direct mail is perfect,? says Pulizzi. ?There?s so much less competition in the print channel these days, the opportunity to get noticed is probably as great as it?s been in decades.?

5. Mail Builds Loyalty

Joe Pulizzi of the Content Marketing Institute by underscores the value that mail has in cultivating loyalty and brand evangelism among consumers. ?We know from our research at the Content Marketing Institute that only about 30 percent of our customers create and distribute a custom magazine, but we think there?s great opportunity in that channel to build loyalty,? he says. ?Social media is selective. It?s hard to get on that must-read list. If you just go through any airport and walk around, you?ll see all the electronic devices and, at the same time, you?ll still see younger Millennials who are holding magazines, especially females, because it?s still such a visual, tactile media.?

6. Mail Is More Sophisticated Now

Jon Yokogawa of interTrend points out that the evolution of mail messaging ? from the refinement of offers to new personalization tools ? has also buoyed the channel and confirmed its ongoing relevance: ?The sophistication of mail messaging has greatly improved over the years. Top companies use the platform, and that builds credibility. Nowadays, direct mail is not just for the remnant budgets of smaller clients. Many industries see this form of marketing as a proven medium, having better and actual measurements (ROI) than traditional TV, print, outdoor advertising or radio.?

Louis Maldonado, managing director of New York-based d exp?sito & partners, an agency specializing in integrated communications, including direct mail, points out how the digital age has added to mail?s power, introducing elements such as QR Codes, augmented reality and SnapTags to mail marketing: ?Direct marketing has experienced a resurgence of excitement given the new technologies and tools available now. The increased targetability of e-mail and mobile channels, as well as the enhanced engagement and dialogue opportunities afforded through social media, serve to complement and fuel response rates to the tried-and-true channels, like direct mail and DRTV.?

7. Mail Helps You Target

8. Mail Delivers Results

Whatever its evolution, direct mail ultimately continues to resonate with marketers for one primary reason: It gets results. Robert Salta, owner of Maryland-based DirectMail.com and a 30-year direct marketing veteran, has strong views about mail?s staying power: ?It?s all about results. Direct mail works,? he says. ?The majority of people will open and read direct mail, but often will choose to ignore e-mail solicitations. The fundamentals of direct mail haven?t changed, partly because their efficacy has been proven time after time. What has changed is the advent of data and digital print technology, and both have benefited direct mail immeasurably.?

For Your Eyes Only: Swedish Bond gala criticized

(AP) ? Were the martinis shaken, not stirred? Nobody knows, but a James Bond-themed party thrown by Sweden's security service sure didn't adhere to this one-liner from "Casino Royale:" ''I will be keeping my eye on our government's money."

Sweden's prime minister has urged the heads of government agencies to control their spending on staff parties after the SAPO security service admitted it held a Bond bash for 4.3 million kronor ($650,000).

The Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter reported that SAPO threw the party for its 1,000 employees in June 2011, featuring roulette tables, a tuxedo-clad orchestra playing Bond film music, and song, dance and comedy performances by Swedish artists.

The report, following a string of articles about spending binges at government agencies, exposed SAPO to both ridicule and criticism.

Prime Minister Fredrik Reinfeldt told the paper Wednesday that agency chiefs "are well paid, they should know better."

SAPO said the party capped a day of educational and inspirational activities mean to provide "knowledge, inspiration and solidarity" after a year of organizational changes and a heavy work load.

"In this case, the agency set aside a large amount of money so that our roughly 1,000 employees stationed across Sweden could gather, something that is necessary for us to carry out our mission," SAPO chief Anders Thornberg said in a statement.

Critics said the event was particularly ill-timed since SAPO has been undergoing a reorganization involving budget cuts.

Asra Kadisha Appears Politically Motivated ... - Yeshiva World News

Rabbi Shalom Fried serves as an advisor on kevarim to Minister of Religious Services Yaakov Margi. Fried spent many years working with Asra Kadisha, and is regarded as being among the experts regarding kevarim in Eretz Yisrael. Fried spoke with Kol Chai Radio on Tuesday night, the eve of 11 Elul 5772 and shared his thoughts on the status of Asra Kadisha today.

Rabbi Fried explained that ?for years, Asra Kadisha was run by Rav Shmidel and the organization did outstanding work, defending the kevarim against anyone and everyone. ?Once upon a time they were committed to saving kevarim not just in Israel, but worldwide. A few years ago, things changed.

?I don?t know if they are trying to save kevarim today for it appears the motive is political. 1,300 avreichim families wish to live in Beit Shemesh and Asra Kadisha is blocking them, causing delays of over 8 months. As a result, these families are paying rent and simply don?t have the money because Asra Kadisha is looking for graves that don?t exist. We are in touch with the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) and they tell us of every kever, without exception. We have orders that if there is the slightest fear of a kever we are called and all work stops until we give the green light. Without Asra Kadisha things are good and today, they simply interfere and they seem to have a political agenda.

?I am not happy over their arrests but the problem is they are using ?terror? as a means towards achieving their goals. I have received threats in the mail and they plaster Jerusalem and Bnei Brak with pashkavilim besmirching my name and my wife. One threat against me was sent to my wife to scare her.

Rav Dovid Shmidel was in charge, a major talmid chacham, and for reasons I don?t know he handed over the mantle of leadership to Kalmanowitz?who is clueless. He simply doesn?t know what he is doing and they just cause delays and problems where there are none.?

Cyborg tissue is half living cells, half electronics

They beat like real heart cells, but the rat cardiomyocytes in a dish at Harvard University are different in one crucial way. Snaking through them are wires and transistors that spy on each cell's electrical impulses. In future, the wires might control their behaviour too.

Versions of this souped-up, "cyborg" tissue have been created for neurons, muscle and blood vessels. They could be used to test drugsMovie Camera or as the basis for biological versions of existing implants such as pacemakers. If signals can also be sent to the cells, cyborg tissue could be used in prosthetics or to create tiny robots.

"It allows one to effectively blur the boundary between electronic, inorganic systems and organic, biological ones," says Charles Lieber, who leads the team behind the cyborg tissue.

Artificial tissue can already be grown on three-dimensional scaffolds made of biological materials that are not electrically active. And electrical components have been added to cultured tissue before, but not integrated into its structure, so they were only able to glean information from the surface.

Electrically inflamed

Lieber's team combined these strands of work to create electrically active scaffolds. They created 3D networks of conductive nanowires studded with silicon sensors. Crucially, the wires had to be flexible and extremely small, to avoid impeding the growth of tissue. The scaffold also contained traditional biological materials such as collagen.

The researchers were able to grow rat neurons, heart cells and muscle in these hybrid meshes. In the case of the heart cells, they started to contract just like normal cells, and the researchers used the network to read out the rate of the beats.

When they added a drug that stimulates heart cell contraction, they detected an increase in the rate, indicating the tissue was behaving like normal and that the network could sense such changes.

Lieber's team also managed to grow an entire blood vessel about 1.5 centimetres long from human cells, with wires snaking through it. By recording electrical signals from inside and outside the vessel? something that was never possible before? the team was able to detect electrical patterns that they say could give clues to inflammation, whether tissue has undergone changes that make it prone to tumour formation or suggest impending heart disease.

Commanding cells

"You could use these things to directly measure the effects of drugs in synthetically grown human tissue without ever having to test them in an actual human being," says Lieber's colleague Daniel Kohane. He also envisions tissue patches that could be added to the surface of a heart, say, to monitor for problems.

Vladimir Parpura, a neurobiologist at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, who was not involved in the study, suggests using the tissue to build tiny, biomimetic robots or implants that repair damaged tissue via electronic pulses.

So far, though, the researchers have only used the electrical scaffolds to record signals? they have yet to feed commands to cells. So Lieber's next step is to add components to the nanoscaffold that could "talk" to neurons. He says the goal is to "wire up tissue and communicate with it in the same way a biological system does".

Commercial Real Estate Finance - Metropolitan Capital Advisors

commercial-real-estate-finance-5Despite the increase in construction activity in some markets and property types, finding bank debt these days is becoming increasingly difficult.? The stratification of borrowers able to source debt is becoming quite rarified.? To use an over-used term, it feels like those pesky top one-percenters are about the only ones able to incentivize a bank to return their phone calls.? Those good borrowers that fall below the high bar are subjected in many instances to long, drawn out ?No?s? after providing 10 years of tax returns, first born children, an accounting of every dime or nickel you have ever seen in the past 20 years and where it went and why.? What is your son?s real basis in his piggy bank that he received in 2001?? Can you quantify his earning potential in the year 2028?? When you found that quarter in the middle of Knox Street in June 1984, can you provide written documentation of its investment history on a monthly basis through August of this year and what your inflation adjusted basis is today?? Often, in order to simply receive a term sheet these days, much less an approved deal, these are the sorts of gyrations you can expect to go through for 3-4 weeks before you are told ?No.?

It is not uncommon anymore to sift through 50-60 banks these days in search of financing for a ?normal? borrower with no legacy issues and a good deal on their hands.? What might have taken a week to source in the past may very well now take several frustrating and demoralizing months.? The actual real estate asset you are seeking to finance is now very tertiary to the lending process these days.? The best way to approach commercial real estate bank lending today is to forget that you have a real estate asset completely and go into the process with the understanding that you are asking for an unsecured loan, being prepared for the scrutiny and liquidity requirements that would entail.

This environment poses risks for third party vendors such as engineers, architects, general contractors, potential tenants, etc., as often they are asked to ?spec? free time on transactions with recognition that once a financing is in place, they will be able to recoup their time spent at closing.? They must carefully balance their time spent with how viable the sponsor is without the benefit of knowing the status of that quarter found in 1984 and how pivotal that one issue might be to a group of lenders.

While some of these examples are slightly extreme, they convey the still unhealthy banking environment present today.? A running joke around here regarding one well known, national bank was that it would only loan to people who did not need the money.? Now, most all banks have modeled themselves around that philosophy.? The entrepreneurial banks have been chased away and beaten into submission with lending officers nervously warming their seats and hoping the phone does not ring with a deal on the other end of it.

Unfortunately, this is the best environment for banks to be lending into instead of cowering in the corner looking for reasons to pass on good deals.? The bloodletting has already happened and the fear that it is just going to continue is a very economically restrictive reaction to the standard, cyclical nature of commercial real estate; it tends to happen about every twenty years or so.? No one should be surprised by it, but continuing to punish ourselves indefinitely does no one any good.

All is not lost, however; Metropolitan Capital Advisors has been very active in the bank lending environment even in the depths of the despair of the past few years.? Deep rooted relationships have helped us survive the carnage. Many old friends were put into hibernation, but many have bounced around and landed at banks with no legacy issues and are being cautiously cajoled out of loans.? Of the $225mm MCA has closed through July, slightly over $80mm was closed with our banking relationships at very favorable rates and terms, including acquisition loans.

We have a full pipeline of prospective bank financings.? Like coaxing a cat out of a tall tree, it takes a careful ear and the right mix of patience, begging, and a few plump field mice to crack the code to the safe. ??Thinking a well-placed bottle rocket will do the trick doesn?t take into account how spooked and nervous these cats are today.

Waving a fat bag of catnip around, though, seems to work best of all.? Must be that the color is so similar to dollar bills which sends them scurrying down so fast?

Share and Enjoy

(AP) ? George Clooney raised almost $15 million for President Barack Obama's re-election campaign at the actor's Los Angeles home in May. For his second act, Clooney is set to arrive Monday in Geneva, a center for international organizations, governance and business.

Organizers expect to pull in a more modest amount of about $500,000 from U.S. donors for Obama's campaign, with many flying in to Geneva from around the world.

Americans Abroad for Obama, the event's sponsor, says on its Web site that guests are paying $15,000 per person to dine with Clooney, $5,000 for a photo with him and $1,000 to attend a reception before the dinner. About 30 people are attending the dinner, with at least 100 at the reception.

The event is co-hosted by Geneva-based American lawyer Charles C. Adams Jr. and Matthew Barzun, Obama's campaign finance chairman. The dinner is being held at Adams' home in an historic part of the city overlooking Lake Geneva, where Adams held a previous fundraiser for Obama in 2008.

Clooney was due to arrive in Geneva from the villa where he typically spends time during the summer on northern Italy's Lake Como. Obama campaign officials in Washington have declined to comment on the fundraiser.

The president has called the actor and director a good friend who tries to keep his distance so Obama won't be criticized for hanging out with Hollywood celebrities. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight earlier this month, Obama said he got to know Clooney through his work on Sudan when Obama was in the U.S. Senate. Clooney has led campaigns to end the conflict in Darfur, Sudan, and for more humanitarian aid for millions of people caught up in the fighting.

The Democratic president and Republican challenger Mitt Romney have both been aggressively hunting for campaign money overseas, seeking any advantage in a tight race that's expected to stay that way into the fall. Each has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars in this fashion, not including the sums raised overseas by both party committees, though it is just a fraction of the more than $300 million Obama has raised overall and the $155 million raised by Romney.

American citizens and green-card holders can legally donate regardless of where they live, subject to the $2,500-per-person contribution limit that applies to those living stateside. U.S. law bans foreigners from contributing to political campaigns. Campaigns, the parties and political committees are expected to review donors and reject any ineligible contributions.

Personal finance: Is a mortgage refinance right for you? ? ? Rankin ...

They?re knocking on the lender?s door. As mortgage rates have tumbled to all-time lows, demand for refinancing has fired up homeowners nationwide.

And it?s not just those drowning in underwater mortgages. With rates for 30-year mortgages hovering below 4 percent since last October, all kinds of homeowners are trying to get their monthly mortgages reduced, say lenders and mortgage experts.

?It?s huge. It?s buried our staff and every other lender in town,? said O.J. Vallejo, mortgage consultant with First Priority Financial in Sacramento, who said his three-person staff has been working six days a week the last four months.

Nationally, refinance volume ?has been running at a three-year high in recent weeks, as mortgage rates remained extremely low,? Mike Fratantoni, vice president of research for the Washington, D.C.-based National Mortgage Bankers Association, said in an email. ?With refinances, the No. 1 driver is interest rates.?

Along with months of record-breaking low interest rates, other factors are driving the refinancing boom: a competitive lending market and changes in some federal refinancing programs for struggling homeowners.

It?s prompted many established homeowners with old-school, high-interest mortgages to decide it?s time to refi.

Neil and Louise Mueller, longtime Land Park residents, were encouraged by their financial planner to look into refinancing their 26-year-old mortgage last spring.

?It was almost too easy,? said Louise, an American River College counselor, who said the process, including a home appraisal, took about three weeks.

The result: Their 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage dropped from 5.12 percent to 3.87 percent, which lowered their monthly payment by about $100. They also pulled out about $11,000 for savings and for a family cruise overseas with their two adult children.

Why refi?

Generally the primary reasons for refinancing a mortgage are to:

? Lower monthly mortgage payments.

? Eliminate the unpredictability of an adjustable-rate mortgage by switching to a fixed rate.

? Free up home equity cash for home improvements, college costs or other expenses.

? Shorten the loan term, say from a 30- to a 15-year mortgage, which can save thousands in interest payments.

Saving money is usually the biggest incentive.

Calling the low rates ?historic,? John Winters, a wealth adviser with Morgan Stanley Smith Barney in Sacramento, said he recently advised all his clients to consider a refi. Especially for those ?finding it difficult to live with? the anemic returns on low-interest CDs and bonds, freeing up monthly income by refinancing can make sense, he said.

Should you refi?

It?s a personal calculation that varies. Generally, you look at how long you plan to be in your current home and whether the upfront costs outweigh the monthly savings.

?If you?re not going to be in your home another one or two years, you?re not going to recoup the closing costs,? said Greg McBride, senior financial analyst with Bankrate.com.

?Everybody?s situation is different,? said mortgage consultant Vallejo. ?There?s no right or wrong answer. The only answer is what works for your family.?

Some couples who refinance are looking ahead to retirement.

?Paying off the mortgage is now back in vogue,? Vallejo said, especially for those in their late 40s or 50s, who want to be mortgage-free at retirement age.

That doesn?t necessarily mean they?ll lower their monthly payment by refinancing. For example, a couple with a $250,000, 30-year loan at 5.25 percent three years ago would have been paying about $1,380 a month. If they refinanced their current balance to a 20-year, 3.5 percent loan today, their payments would increase slightly, to $1,405.

?Their payment goes up $25, but they just took seven years off their mortgage,? said Vallejo. ?That?s almost $116,000 in interest. That?s huge.?

On the other hand, younger homeowners with kids might choose a 30-year mortgage when they refinance because they need the lower monthly cash flow to save for college or pay off debt. Or those with adjustable mortgages due to reset to higher rates may want to lock in single-digit rates.

What you?ll pay

The mortgage rate you?ll be offered depends on numerous factors, including: your credit score, loan amount, loan-to-value ratio (how much you owe compared to the home?s appraised value), length of your loan term and type of home (rates on condos, rentals and vacation homes are typically higher.)

Lots of mortgage ads promise ?no-cost? loans. According to some lenders, that?s a misnomer.

?It really means ?no cash out of pocket,? ? said Vallejo. ?There?s no free lunch; somebody is paying for it.?

Typically, in a no-cost loan, all closing costs and pre-paid items (such as appraisal fees and credit checks) are paid by the lender and built into the interest rate.

Shop around

It pays to compare quotes from several lenders because they offer different rates and fees. Start with your current lender or sit down with a local loan originator. You can also do refinance comparisons online, using mortgage calculators at sites like Bankrate.com or those of individual banks and lenders.

If you?re a struggling homeowner, ask your lender about changes in the federal Home Affordable Refinance Program and FHA refinance programs that have made refinancing options more plentiful.

Bankrate.com?s McBride said the refinance market is particularly ?compelling? in California, where home prices have bottomed out and there are lots of competitive lenders.

But don?t focus solely on interest rates, said McBride. When comparing refinance quotes, look at appraisal fees, title searches and closing costs. And be sure you?re comparing the same loan terms, not a 15- and a 30-year, for instance.

Good standing

Be sure the lender is in good standing.

Tom Pool, spokesman for the state Department of Real Estate, said state and federal licensing standards for mortgage originators are much stricter than they used to be, which ?has weeded out most of the bad actors.?

Nevertheless, you can check a company?s or individual?s licensing status at the state Department of Corporations (www.corp.ca.gov) or the Department of Real Estate (www.dre.ca.gov).

Pool also recommends online searches at sites like the Better Business Bureau (necal.bbb.org) to see if the lender has been linked to bad practices or scams.

Too late?

Even though interest rates have inched upward in the last month, you?re probably not too late.

?It?s not worth losing any sleep over,? said Bankrate?s McBride. ?Given the European debt crisis, (interest rates) can?t rise appreciably.?

On the other hand, the national mortgage bankers group predicts mortgage interest rates will ?drift slowly higher? next year, leading to significant declines in refinance activity.

Above all, make sure a refinance is right for your situation.

?It?s a significant financial transaction,? said Edward Achtner, an Oakland-based regional sales executive for Bank of America. ?If buying a home is the largest transaction a consumer embarks upon, a refinance is a close second. Do the research, evaluate the different options. Take your time and do not be pressured into making any decisions.?

'A less polar pole': Arctic sea ice at record low

This visualization shows the extent of Arctic sea ice on Aug. 26, 2012, the smallest area in three decades of satellite records. The yellow line shows the average minimum summer ice coverage from 1979 to 2010.

By Miguel Llanos, NBC News

The amount of summer sea ice in the Arctic has reached a record low in three decades of satellite data, scientists reported Tuesday, with one of them describing recent warm years there as creating a "less polar pole." The decline was expected to continue for at least several more days before cold weather sets in and creates new ice through fall and winter.

The area of Arctic waters covered by sea ice was measured at 1.58 million square miles on Sunday, the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) reported. That's below the previous record low of 1.61 million square miles set on Sept. 18, 2007, and in line with earlier expectations for the season.

"Including this year, the six lowest extents in the satellite record have occurred in the last six years," the center noted on its website.

?

"Parts of the Arctic have become like a giant Slushee this time of year" due to thinning ice,?Walt Meier, a scientist at the center, told reporters.

That thinner ice also explains how a storm in early August made a significant impact in speeding up the decline this month, Meier said.

At NASA, which helps with the satellite data, scientist Claire Parkinson said the trend has been "strongly downward."

The 2007 decrease "stunned" researchers since it was so large compared to previous years, she said, and "this year it's plummeting" further.

It's not just sea ice in summer that's been weakened, she added. "No matter what month you're in, it's less ice than it used to be decades ago," she said.

The researchers added that manmade emissions tied to global warming offer the best explanation for the decline.

Ted Scambos, a senior NSIDC researcher, told NBC News that no one weather pattern explains the downward trend.?"Greenhouse gasses are the only consistent explanation for a persistently warming Arctic," he added.

"The Arctic was our refrigerator," he said, but the warmer weather of the last five or six years have meant "a less polar pole."

Scambos said the Arctic system is too variable to guarantee that each future year would show a decline, but over time he expects the decline to continue. "I think we can expect further declines to new records," he said, "and eventually, an ice-free North Pole."

Darke County Parks programs are designed to engage, inform and ...

BY JOY ROSEBERRY

ASST. MANAGING EDITOR

DARKE COUNTY--The first Darke County Parks levy was passed in 1994 and part of the promise of that passage was the construction of a facility to be used as a nature education center, community center for non-profits and government meeting space.

In 1997, the Nature Center at Shawnee Prairie was opened, a director, office manager and staff of Naturalist Educators were hired and programs began.

?Those first programs were a general walk through of the parks,? said Roger Van Frank, Darke County Parks current director. ?They involved identifying or inventories of species.?

Today, camps, programs, classes and workshops run the gamut from backcountry survival to making maple syrup to hummingbird banding. And more.

Today, basic skills are lost to much of society and Darke County Parks has developed many workshops and classes to fill that gap with Outdoor Skills Development programs.

The classes are ?ever evolving,? according to Senior Naturalist Robb Clifford. ?We try to offer programs and workshops that get back to arts of the past that are slowly disappearing.?

For instance, last month guests learned to make soap, could take a workshop on Fly Tying, spend an afternoon kayaking or canoeing, and top off the summer with a campout.

In the next couple of months, visitors can take part in a ?Hands on Herbal? workshop, or learn the very basic skill of fire starting ? without matches and upcoming are knitting classes and a fall gardening seminar. It?s not unusual to see a Dulcimer Class or Open Hearth Cooking on the calendar as well.

Visitors can ?come and sit a spell? at concerts, movies and? tours of the Log House. And if you don?t want to sit, take part in Bike to Health rides and Early Morning Discovery Hikes.

KIDS? PROGRAMS AND CAMPS

?The kids are the stewards of tomorrow,? states Van Frank. ?We want nature and our parks to be part of their life.? Striving to make kids programming a vital? of part of Darke County Parks, the following sessions are offered:

* Parent and Preschooler Adventures, a series of monthly, hour-long programs designed to give parents (or grandparents, or babysitters) an opportunity to investigate nature through hands-on activities, hikes, stories, songs and take-home projects. ?Little Explorers? classes, are designed for? 2-3 year olds and ?Seedling? classes are designed for 4-5 year olds. Worms, butterflies, crawfish, nuts, trees and plants are just a small example of wonder the little ones can explore.

* Park P.A.L.S. is designed for 6-9 years olds, with the mission to develop future earth stewards through meaningful educational opportunities and hands on experiences. A few of the areas explored by these kids include mammals, night critters, stream quality management, and wildflowers.

* Junior Naturalists is a series of programs designed to give 10-12 year olds an introduction to natural resource management. Hikes, work projects and independent study are all part of the program. A few?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????? ??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????of the topics covered include tree identification, winter survival, and bird breeding.

According to Senior Naturalist Robb Clifford, the Junior Naturalist classes were added later than the others because those who had enjoyed Parent and Preschooler Adventures and Park P.A.L.S. wanted to continue. Even now, the kids always ask for something in the next age range, but says Clifford, ?we ask them to take part in the adult programs. It?s time for them to move on.?

However, older kids, ages 13-15 can take advantage of summer camp, with Extreme Adventures, which this summer, included zip-lining, overnight camping and kayaking.

Camps which included an overnight stay were also held for kids ages 8-12 (Backyard Survival) and ages 10-12 (Paddling, Hiking and Camping).

The younger kids, 6-7, and 8-9, took advantage of Summer Day Camps.

?The dedication of the staff is extraordinary. They have to love what they are doing to pass it along to the kids. That they have the trust of families to drop their kids off for camp and for overnighters, proves we are doing something right,? said Van Frank.

Darke County Parks has worked tirelessly in preparing Nature?s Classroom, environmental education programs designed to enhance and supplement Ohio?s science curriculum. Each program topic addresses current ODOE Science Grade Level indicators and the Science Benchmarks by Academic Content Standards.

The program involves class field trips to Shawnee Prairie and a classroom visit by a Parks? Naturalist.

During the 2011-2012 school year, 5-7,000 school age kids visited the preserve (this number includes the children?s programs).

However, due to cutbacks, some schools have not been able to take a field trip to the prairie. Hopefully, park personnel will be able to get to more schools, offering a kind of ?Classroom in a Box.? Added Van Frank, ?we need to get to the schools. It will be more of an expense for us, but I feel that?s part of our mission.?

Programs can also be adapted for scouts and other groups as well.

Right now the Nature Center is home to Old Thyme Gardeners, Darke County Photo Club, Darke County Birders Club, and Darke County Canoe and Kayak Club. As well as hosting meetings, these groups also offer workshops and programs throughout the year.

The Greenville Art Guild holds an exhibit every fall.

Families have come to expect Darke County Parks to have the programs they want. Said Van Frank, ?we try to engage every person who comes in here. You don?t have to come for a program, you can just come and visit. We want everyone who visits to build us into their routine.?

********************

* Joining Van Frank and Clifford are Naturalist/Coordinator Laura Schwieterman, Naturalist Erica Dickey, Office Manager Deb Shiverdecker, Manager of Parks Maintenance Operations Nathan Epperly, Parks Maintenance Chris Supinger, and a tremendous amount of dedicated volunteers who make it all possible.

*The Nature Center located at Shawnee Prairie Preserve (4267 OH-502, Greenville) is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Restrooms and water fountains are accessible during business hours, as well as educational displays, live animal displays, nature reference library, bird observation area, and nature gift shop.

*Nonprofit organizations may reserve the Nature Center's assembly room, classroom, or meeting room for morning, afternoon, and evening meetings. Room rentals are also available for private parties.

******************

Mem's Political Scrapbook: Imagine if Jesus had not been a socialist ...

The Not-So-Social Gospel
This was sent out in email by the Cath News
August 24, 2012
(pic was not included)

The Lazy Paralytic

1. When Jesus returned to Capernaum after some days, it was reported that he was at his home. 2. So many gathered around that there was no longer room for them, not even in front of the door; and he was speaking the word to them. 3. Then some people came, bringing to him a paralyzed man, carried by four of them.

4. And when they could not bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above him; and after having dug through it, they let down the mat on which the paralytic lay. 5. When Jesus saw this he grew angry, ?Why did you wreck my roof? Do you have any idea how much that cost to install? Do you know how many tables and chairs I had to make in my carpentry shop to pay for that roof? The reeds alone cost five talents. I had them carted in from Bethany.? 6. The disciples had never seen Jesus so angry about his possessions. He continued, ?This house is my life. And the roof is the best part.? The disciples fell silent. 7. ?It?s bad enough that you trash my private property, now you want me to heal you?? said Jesus, ?And did you not see the stone walls around this house?? ?Yes,? said the man?s friends. ?Are these not the stone walls common to the towns and villages of Galilee?? 8. ?No,? Jesus answered. ?This is a gated community. How did you get in?? The man?s friends grew silent. 9. Then Jesus turned and said to the paralytic, ?Besides, can?t you take care of your own health problems? I?m sure that your family can care for you, or maybe the synagogue can help out.? 10. ?No, Lord,? answered the man?s friends. ?There is no one. His injuries are too severe. To whom else can we go?? 11. ?Well, not me,? said Jesus. ?What would happen if I provided access to free health care for everyone? That would mean that people would not only get lazy and entitled, but they would take advantage of the system. 12. Besides, look at me: I?m healthy. And you know why? Because I worked hard for my money, and took care of myself.? The paralyzed man then grew sad and he addressed Jesus. ?But I did work, Lord,? said the paralytic. ?Until an accident rendered me paralyzed.? ?Yes,? said the man?s friends. ?He worked very hard.? 13. ?Well,? said Jesus, ?That?s just part of life, isn?t it?? ?Then what am I to do, Lord?? said the paralytic. ?I don?t know. Why don?t you sell your mat?? 14. All in the crowd then grew sad. ?Actually, you know what you can do?? said Jesus. ?You can reimburse me for my roof. Or I?ll sue you.? And all were amazed. 15. ?We have never seen anything like this,? said the crowd. The Very Poorly Prepared Crowd

1. The day was drawing to a close, and the twelve apostles came to Jesus and said, ?Send the crowd away, so that they may go into the surrounding villages and countryside, to lodge and get provisions; for we are here in a deserted place.? 2 But Jesus said to them, ?Why not give them something to eat?? They said, ?We have no more than five loaves and two fish ? unless we are to go and buy food for all these people.? 3 For there were about five thousand men. And Jesus said to his disciples, ?You know what? You?re right. Don?t waste your time and shekels. It would be positively immoral for you to spend any of your hard-earned money for these people. They knew full well that they were coming to a deserted place, and should have relied on themselves and brought more food. As far as I?m concerned, it?s every five thousand men for themselves.? 4. The disciples were astonished by this teaching. ?But Lord,? said Thomas. ?The crowd will surely go hungry.? Jesus was amazed at his hard-headedness. ?That?s not my problem, Thomas. Better that their stomachs are empty than they become overly dependent on someone in authority to provide loaves and fishes for them on a regular basis. Where will it end? Will I have to feed them everyday?? ?No, Lord,? said Thomas, ?Just today. When they are without food. After they have eaten their fill, they will be healthy, and so better able to listen to your word and learn from you.? Jesus was grieved at Thomas?s answer. Jesus answered, ?It is written: There?s no such thing as a free lunch.? So taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and took one loaf and one fish for himself, and gave the rest to the twelve, based on their previously agreed-upon contractual per diem. But he distributed none to the crowd, because they needed to be taught a lesson. So Jesus ate and he was satisfied. The disciples somewhat less so. ?Delicious,? said Jesus. What was left over was gathered up and saved for Jesus, should he grow hungry in a few hours. The very poorly prepared crowd soon dispersed.

The Rich and Therefore Blessed Young Man

1. As Jesus was setting out on a journey, a man ran up to him and knelt before him, and asked, ?Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?? 2. And Jesus said to him, ?What have you done so far?? 3. And he said to Him, ?Well I was born into a wealthy family, got into a good school in Galilee because my parents donated a few thousand talents for a building with a nice reed roof, and now I have a high-paying job in the Roman treasury managing risk.? 4. Looking at him, Jesus felt an admiration for him, and said to him, ?Blessed are you! For you are not far from being independently wealthy.? And the man was happy. Then Jesus said, ?But there is one thing you lack: A bigger house in a gated community in Tiberias. Buy that and you will have a treasure indeed. And make sure you get a stone countertop for the kitchen. Those are really nice.? The disciples were amazed. 5. Peter asked him, ?Lord, shouldn?t he sell all his possessions and give it to the poor?? Jesus grew angry. ?Get behind me, Satan! He has earned it!? Peter protested: ?Lord,? he said, ?Did this man not have an unjust advantage? What about those who are not born into wealthy families, or who do not have the benefit of a good education, or who, despite all their toil, live in the poorer areas of Galilee, like Nazareth, your own home town?? 6. ?Well,? said Jesus, ?first of all, that?s why I left Nazareth. There were too many poor people always asking me for charity. They were as numerous as the stars in the sky, and they annoyed me. Second, once people start spending again, like this rich young man, the Galilean economy will inevitably rebound, and eventually some of it will trickle down to the poor. Blessed are the patient! But giving the money away, especially if he can?t write it off, is a big fat waste.? The disciples? amazement knew no bounds. ?But Lord,? they said, ?what about the passages in both the Law and the Prophets that tell us to care for widows and orphans, for the poor, for the sick, for the refugee? What about the many passages in the Scriptures about justice?? 7. ?Those are just metaphors,? said Jesus. ?Don?t take everything so literally.?

Yes, this would have been your Bible if Jesus had been a Tea Party Republican so next time you call me a liberal or a socialist ask yourself why you think that is a bad thing? -Mem

beIN Sport USA soccer channel comes to Comcast, DirecTV and Dish Network

beIN Sport USA soccer channel adds Comcast, along with DirecTV and Dish, to list of carriers

While most of us have spent the last few weeks preparing for the return of North American-style football (get our NFL Pick 'Em league info here), soccer fans in the US and France have been tracking the sudden rise of international TV network beIN Sport. Operated out of Qatar by Al Jazeera, beIN Sport USA has snagged the exclusive broadcast rights to Spain's La Liga, Italy's Serie A, France's Ligue 1, South American World Cup Qualifiers and Copa America 2015, plus the away games for the US national men's team in their qualifying rounds. The bad news for those interested in viewing the games is that until just recently, there were no carriers for the channel, although DirecTV (which also recently added BBC America HD for Doctor Who fans) and Dish have subsequently added it to a few tiers. Most recently, Comcast announced the channel's availability on its Spanish MultiLatino package and for English viewers on the Xfinity TV Sports Entertainment lineup, with access also available via internet streaming. It appears Fox and ESPN have a new challenger at least for broadcast rights to soccer, and beIN Sport has expressed interest into other arenas as well, which could see it become a newer version of the now-defunct Worldsport HD channel for fans of sports that are more popular outside the US.
