Galliani opens door for Kaka to return to AC Milan

Associated Press Sports

updated 9:09 a.m. ET July 25, 2012

MILAN (AP) -AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani has opened the door to a return for Rossoneri icon Kaka from Real Madrid.

Kaka's days at Madrid appear to be numbered, and the Brazil star was left behind for Tuesday's friendly win against Real Oviedo.

Galliani has reportedly held informal talks with Kaka's agent and, when asked about a possible return, says "certain loves never die, they just go round on a long journey and come back again."

Kaka is still idolized by Milan fans after a golden six-year spell during which he helped it to the Serie A title and the Champions League, becoming a global superstar.

He moved to Madrid in 2009 for ?65 million (then $92 million), making him the second most expensive football signing ever after Cristiano Ronaldo.

Colorado shooting victim gives birth

A woman whose husband was critically wounded in the Colorado movie theater shooting has given birth to the couple's first child.

Katie Medley gave birth to a boy named Hugo Jackson Medley on Tuesday at University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora, the same hospital where her husband, Caleb Medley, lies in critical but stable condition.

Caleb, 23, is suffering from a bullet wound to an eye, according to a CBS News report. The hospital says Katie Medley, 21, and baby are doing great. Katie Medley was unhurt in the shooting.

But as Caleb slowly recovers, medical bills are mounting. According to Michael West, a friend of the couple's, Caleb, who is an aspiring comedian, does not have health insurance. And medical bills could near $2 million, according to the CBS report.

So West has started a website to collect donations. So far it has raised almost $86,000.

Meanwhile, a horde of mostly anonymous donors has contributed nearly $2 million to a network of nonprofits that are helping those injured in the Aurora movie theater shooting on Friday. Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures are among the donors, but most who gave have asked to remain anonymous, according to Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper's office.

Caleb and Katie Medley went to the midnight showing of "The Dark Knight Rises" in Aurora as a last date before officially becoming parents, according to The Associated Press.

Katie's father, David Sanchez, was one of the family members who attended the court appearance of James Holmes, who is suspected of shooting and killing 12 people and injuring 58 at a showing of the new Batman movie in Aurora.

"She is going to be hurting and damaged for a long time," Sanchez told CBS-4 Denver. "She needs to take care of her husband and everybody needs to pray for them."

Officials to discuss rule for using long putters

(AP) ? One day after Ernie Els won the British Open to become the third major champion using a belly putter, the Royal & Ancient said long putters were "firmly back on the radar" and that a decision could come soon on whether players can keep using them.

R&A chief executive Peter Dawson said discussions with the U.S. Golf Association about longer putters anchored to the body began before Els holed a 15-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to win the claret jug at age 42.

Keegan Bradley at the PGA Championship and Webb Simpson at the U.S. Open both used belly putters. Adam Scott, who had a four-shot lead with four holes to play in the British Open, was using a long putter that he says helped turn around his game.

"We appreciate that there is much speculation about this and that we need to clarify the position as soon as possible," Dawson said Monday. "And I think you're going to see us saying something about it one way or the other in a few months, rather than years."

But he made clear that the R&A and USGA, which set the rules for golf around the world, have not decided whether to ban them.

"This decision has not been taken," he said. "Please don't think that it has."

Tiger Woods was among those this year who recommended that the putter simply be the shortest club in the bag. Els once criticized the long putters, but when he struggled mightily with his putting, he switched to a belly putter late last year.

"As long as it's legal, I'll keep cheating like the rest of them," Els said in October.

Dawson said the discussion with the governing bodies has switched from an equipment issue to a rules issue.

"The initial determination has been that we are examining the subject from a method of stroke standpoint rather than length of putter standpoint, and that takes it into the area of the rules of play, the rules of golf, rather than the rules of equipment," he said.

The rules committees of the R&A and USGA are conducting the study, and each will make a recommendation.

Because it is being treated as a potential rule change, it would not become effective until 2016. The Rules of Golf are updated every four years.

Jim MacArthur, chairman of the championship committee for the R&A, said there were 27 long putters and 16 belly putters in the 156-man field at the Open. Dawson said the number of golfers using the long putter has dramatically increased from about 5 percent five years ago, although he did not notice an increase at the recent British Amateur.

"It hasn't yet backed its way all the way down the game, although the statistics would show ? and I've checked this with the manufacturers ? that at the club level or recreational level, they are much more used in the United States than they are anywhere else in the world," Dawson said.

Simpson and Bradley both were regarded as good putters before switching to the belly. Padraig Harrington, who always has used a conventional putter, said more players might be tempted to switch if it's clear their competitors have an advantage.

Phil Mickelson experimented with the belly putter last year in the FedEx Cup playoffs.

"Obviously, if the standard of putting goes up, which it clearly does ... guys wouldn't be using them if they didn't putt better with them, yeah?" he said. "If the standard of putting goes up, it puts more pressure on the guys that aren't using one just to compete. So all of a sudden, it's hard for a normal putter. Is he doing the right thing? Should he be using the long putter?

"So it actually has a negative effect on others as much as a positive effect on some."

Scott made the biggest turnaround. He felt such despair over his putting that he switched at the Match Play Championship in February 2011. His good friend, Geoff Ogilvy, said that his fellow Australian still was capable of making putts and winning even with a short putter.,

"It just makes his bad days better," Ogilvy said. "It doesn't make his good days better."

The objection Dawson has heard the most is that if players can't putt with a conventional club, why should they have a crutch to compete with those who can.

"That's the general argument one hears," Dawson said. "But we're also seeing now people who can putt perfectly well in the conventional way thinking that an anchored stroke gives them an advantage. I think that's the fundamental change that we've witnessed in the last couple of years."

Daily Kos: Small businesses do just fine with high taxes on wealthy

Well, lookie here. It turns out, according to this Center on Budget and Policy Priorities analysis, based on a Treasury Department study, those engines of job creation did just fine when taxes were high on the nation's wealthiest. It all depends, the report says, on how you define "small business," and the definition used by Republicans is so broad "that under it, both President Obama and Governor Romney would count as small business owners ? as would 237 of the nation?s 400 wealthiest people."
Charges that any tax increases on people making over $1 million a year, such as Senator Sheldon Whitehouse?s proposal to implement the ?Buffett Rule,? would inflict injury on many small businesses rest on the same misleading definition of small businesses

Contrary to these claims, an extension of the high-income Bush tax cuts would, in essence, constitute a massive tax cut for very wealthy individuals who overwhelmingly aren?t small business operators. ?Analysis by the Urban Institute-Brookings Tax Policy Center finds that extending the tax cuts for people over $250,000 of income ($200,000 for single filers) would overwhelmingly benefit the highest-income taxpayers: ?82 percent of the value of the tax cut would flow to filers with more than $1 million in adjusted gross income, who would get an average tax cut of $164,000 a piece.

There's also actual recent history to prove that higher taxes on the wealthy don't retard business growth, at all. That would be the job creation record under Clinton's higher tax rates in comparison to business growth after the Bush tax cuts. That comparison is clear in the chart above. To make this absolutely clear, real small businesses generated jobs more than twice as effectively under the Clinton tax code than under Bush's.

Guess what else is good about letting the tax cuts for income over $250,000 expire? It's what the people want. They see it as both helpful to the economy, and to make the tax system more fair. All of which means the Senate Democrats have to stand firm on their threat to let the tax cuts expire.

Big Ticket Houses on the Rise; 36 Sales Last Week

July 23rd, 2012 by Kara Tiernan ? No Comments ? Concord, Condos, Escala

I?ve seen a recent trend in big ticket homes over $500,000 selling more and more as we get into the thick of summer, (or lack there of). Last week along with the unfortunate horrific shooting in Colorado we had 36 sales here in the surrounding Seattle area, with quite a few very interesting town homes and condos. A few that are worth checking out that I didn?t get to cover today include another unit at the Vine in Belltown, a 1bedroom at the Concord, and just or authenticity sake, this Spanish inspired unit in Eastlake.

Two units at the Escala sold last week, the other being a corner unit #2408 for nearly $1mil. This 1 bedroom 1.5 bath unit features a very large master, with a fairly large deck accessible from the bedroom and living area. I love the pedini wood cabinetry in this building and the decorative granite counter tops in the kitchen. The skyline views from the building are obviously included in the price tag, as it appears you might even get an exceptional view from the porcelain bath tub.

It?s almost time for school to start, and I find that the Duncan Place Condominiums would be ideal for graduate students and professors looking to keep their distance from the noisy streets of campus living. This particular 1 bed 1 bath unit sold for an affordable $244,000, and has exceptional natural light in the majority of rooms because of the lovely nearly floor to ceiling windows throughout.

These units have all new state of the art stainless steel appliances, and beautiful cheery hardwood flooring in the kitchen. Each unit has a secured parking spot and ample storage space. Check out the granite counter topped island in the kitchen, could be perfect for making apps before heading over to the building?s roof top deck or private home owner?s lounge for neighbor mixers.

This 2 bed 2 full bath 11th floor corner unit at Seattle Heights sold last week for $370,000, with an estimated value of $402,401. I think each and every room in this unit has character, with that fabulous stained wood flooring, the peak a boo bar in the kitchen, and beautiful city views, (see the space needle carefully captured in one of the bedroom shots. Seattle Heights quite the amenity package as well, with secured garage parking, a pool & sauna and 24 hour concierge service, should you need to call someone up to show off your new space.
