The number of failed colorectal cancer diagnoses?is increasing,?especially in?patients younger than 50. The outdated belief that colorectal cancer doesn't appear in people in their 30s or 40s is causing a number of patients to suffer a delayed cancer diagnosis and a worse outlook. The case of Carol Carr provides a sad, but accurate illustration of the impact of a colorectal cancer misdiagnosis.
Carr was 44 when she visited doctors with symptoms of diarrhea, vomiting, extreme fatigue, cramping and iron deficiency. The physicians diagnosed her with various illnesses but never performed a colonoscopy to rule out colorectal cancer. The treatments they prescribed had no effect on Carr, who continued to suffer in agony and was unable to work.
After her condition continued to worsen for some time, a doctor finally ordered a colonoscopy. The procedure revealed that Carr was suffering from Stage II colorectal cancer. Sadly, Carr is not an unusual case.
Historically, colon cancer only surfaced in patients 50 and older; however, recent decades have shown in increase in the condition developing in younger ages. Sadly, many physicians have not taken note of this trend and dismiss it as a potential cause of symptoms in younger people; effectively allowing the cancer to continue developing until a proper diagnosis is made months, or even years, down the road.
